Zinc sulfate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula ZnSO4. It is commonly found as a heptahydrate (ZnSO4⋅7H2O).

Uses of Zinc Sulphate (Medical):

Zinc is an essential trace element involved in numerous bodily functions, including:

  • Immune function: Zinc is crucial for the development and function of immune cells.
  • Wound healing: It plays a role in tissue repair and regeneration.
  • Protein and DNA synthesis: Zinc is a cofactor for many enzymes involved in these processes.
  • Sense of taste and smell.
  • Growth and development.

Due to these roles, Zinc Sulphate IP is primarily used for:

  • Treating and preventing zinc deficiency: This is the most common medical use. Deficiency can occur due to inadequate dietary intake, malabsorption, increased loss (e.g., diarrhea), or increased bodily needs.
  • Adjunct to oral rehydration therapy (ORT) for diarrhea in children: Zinc supplementation, along with ORT, has been shown to reduce the duration and severity of diarrhea in children and may also decrease the risk of future episodes. This is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
  • Treatment of Wilson's disease: Zinc can help reduce copper absorption and increase its excretion in this genetic disorder that causes copper overload in the body.
  • Part of parenteral nutrition: Zinc sulfate injection is used as a supplement in intravenous feeding solutions.
  • Topical astringent: In some cases, it can be used topically for its astringent properties.

Side Effects:

Side effects of zinc sulfate are generally uncommon at recommended doses. However, excessive intake can lead to:

  • Gastrointestinal issues: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea.
  • Metallic taste in the mouth.
  • Headache.
  • Dizziness.

In rare cases, allergic reactions can occur. Long-term high doses of zinc can also interfere with the absorption of other minerals like copper and iron.

Important Considerations:

  • Zinc sulfate should be taken as directed by a healthcare professional.
  • It's often recommended to take zinc supplements on an empty stomach for better absorption, but it can be taken with food if it causes stomach upset.
  • Zinc can interact with certain medications, including some antibiotics (like tetracyclines and quinolones) and penicillamine. It's important to inform your doctor about all medications you are taking.
  • Dietary sources of zinc include meat, seafood, dairy products, nuts, and whole grains.
